Origin of Australian Labradoodles

Australian Labradoodles are a crossbreed between Poodles and Labrador Retrievers, one of the first so called Designer Dogs. They were initially developed in Australia to create hypoallergenic guide dogs.

The Australian Guide Dog Association received an inquiry from a blind lady in Hawaii requesting a guide dog that would not cause her allergies to flare. The reason Australia was chosen was because of the Quarantine laws Australia has they could export out of Australia and the dog could go straight into the home and community without being in quarantine.

The Australian Guide Dog Association did not have anything non shedding so they decided to try to breed something to suit. With the nature of the Labrador and the non-shedding of the poodle the Labradoodle was born. This however wasn't a 100% success for the Guide Dogs and they did not pursue to continue to breed this cross however a couple of other breeders decided to continue to breed this cross and introduce some other breeds such as the English and American Cocker Spaniel, the Irish Water Spaniel and the Curly Coat Retriever to strengthen the non-shedding, intelligence and Temperament of this breed now known today as the Australian Labradoodle.

Having a low to non-shedding coat more and more people were becoming attracted to them and with the wonderful disposition and kindness the Labradoodle possessed they were becoming so popular and versatile. Their intelligence and tenacity started to attract people and trainers’ wanting special dogs for assistance and therapy dogs.

Today, the Australian Labradoodle is well known as

  • an allergy-friendly soul mate, family companion,
  • seizure alert dog,
  • agility dog,
  • assistance dog to those with physical, emotional and mental challenges.

Coat Types of Australian Labradoodles

Australian Labradoodles come in three main coat types: wool, fleece, and hair. Each coat type has its unique characteristics, the wool coat being quite thick and curly, (like a lamb or poodle) the fleece coat being more of a shaggy wavy coat both are hypoallergenic and non-shedding. The wool is better for allergy sufferers that can have issues with breathing. The hair coat which we don't have much at all now is a low-shedding flatter coat. Their coats require regular grooming to keep them healthy and mat-free.
